We are new to the area and are looking for a closer church. We currently attend Harvest Fellowship in San Antonio. I am a single mom with 3 kids a son age 11 and two daughters ages 6 and 8. We are looking for a place with a great children’s program. Could you please give me more info. Thank you. Ann Mercer
Ann,
Thank you for your great question. Well I must say as a father of three ages 7, 6, and 2 our Crossing Kids ministry is pretty fantastic. As a church we make a strong effort to find a balance between traditional children’s ministry where kiddos are always separated from their parents and a more family ministry approach. We see great values to both and as a result have structured our church to utilize both.
Our Crossing Kids Ministry has groups for ages newborn – 3rd grade on Sunday mornings during the 10:00 AM service. In addition, we have a preteen ministry for 4th – 7th grades, they participate in the music portion of the service then are dismissed to their groups when the message begins, currently they meet the first 3 Sundays of each month.
On Sunday morning, Crossing Kids takes the opportunity to minister to children in an age specific way that they can understand and enjoy. They have a great time and it is not unusual for people who visit our church to have their kiddos beg their parents to come back. In addition, to try and keep the entire family on one message for the week Crossing Kids normally has their primary message synchronized with the message for the adults. This helps families be able to go home and discuss things they heard together. On months that have 5 Sundays we take that 5th Sunday as an opportunity to have family service in which the Crossing Kids and their leaders lead the music time and the pastors give a shortened message. On these Sundays we also share a potluck meal together on campus.
We incorporate a more family ministry approach when it come to our connection groups that meet in homes during the week and service opportunities in the community. During that time our children are much more involved in the group with the parents in discussion, prayer, etc.
